Apple Butter

Apple Butter

I have been wanting to try apple butter ever since I heard about it. Apple butter is basically a concentrated for of apple sauce where the sugar in the apples caramelizes and turns dark brown. It gets its name from the fact that it has a thick butter like consistency. Apple butter is pretty easy to make. You essentially just simmer some apples, sugar and spices until the the apples start to turn dark and then puree them. In addition to being easy to make the apple butter is really good. The apple butter that I made is disappearing quite quickly.

Ingredients:
10 apples such as Granny Smith (peeled, cored and sliced)
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup apple juice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves

Directions:
1. Simmer everything in a pot until the apples are soft, most of the liquid has evaporated and the sauce is thick and dark brown.
2. Puree the mixture.

Looks delicious - I've never tried Apple Butter, was under the impression it had actual butter in it :) no harm done, it looks seriously delicious. Might have to grab some apples next time I'm at the markets...

Yummy! I've been wanting to make apple butter for a while. I even got a food mill just for that purpose!

ooohh!! I never thought to make this myself! I don't think this would need an accompaniment, just a utensil, my index finger..

Golly, you made your own - that's ambitious. I admit I just buy it in a jar. Yours looks like good stuff!

I've never heard of apple butter before this. On man, I wish I knew about it last autumn when I had so many apples from the tree in my garden I didn't know what to do with them! :( (There's only so many apple pies/crumble/sauces that you could eat...) I'm making a note of this, thanks!

I've never made apple butter - I didn't realize it's fairly easy to do. Yours looks a lot more appealing than any store-bought version. I'll have to try making this when we pick apples next autumn.

I'm also a big fan of apple butter, but have never made it! I usually get some in the fall from one of the local apple farms. I may just make it myself next time! Total Yum!

My Nana passed on a shortcut -- start with a huge jar of store bought or homemade applesauce, pour into slowcooker with sugar and spices and heat through a few hours on low, adding moisture (water, cider, juice) if necessary. Also, apple butter is AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING spread on plain scrambled eggs/omelet. Try it, seriously, so many people think "yuck" but then they try it, and now some will not eat eggs any other way.
