Apple butter is essentially an apple sauce that has been reduced until it has the constancy of a butter in that it is spreadable with a knife and given how easy it is to make, it's one of my favourite fall treats. One day I was thinking that if you could make apple butter then why not pear butter? After trying it, finding out that not only did it work but it worked really well, it quickly became my new favourite! This pear butter is just as easy to make as the apple butter and you can make it in the slow cooker! You simply peel and core the pears, place them in the slow cooker with some sugar and spices and cook until tender, puree and then cook on high, uncovered, until the sauce reduces to the consistency of a butter or a spread. I like to add a hint of ginger in the form of fresh grated ginger to my pear butters but it is completely optional! No matter how you spread it, this slow cooker pear butter is an amazing way to enjoy some fall flavours!

Slow Cooker Pear Butter

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 10 hours Total Time: 10 hours 10 minutes Servings: 16(~2 cups or 16 1 tablespoon servings)

An intensely flavoured pear sauce with a thick, spreadable, buttery consistency that's perfect slathered on your bagel or toast!

  • 3 pounds pears, peeled and cored
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ginger, grated (optional)
  1. Mix everything, place in a slow cooker and cook, covered, until the pears are nice and tender, about 6-10 hours on low or 2-3 hours on high, before pureeing in a food processor.
  2. Cook on high, uncovered, until the sauce has thickened to the desired consistency, about 2-3 hours.

Hi Kevin, just wanted you to know that you’re 1 of 2 recipe email subscriptions that has survived the test of time! I recently made maple bourbon apple butter & am really happy with it. A spoonful adds a really nice taste to my porridge (I’m a Brit living in Canada so really should be saying “oatmeeeeeeal”)! I look forward to trying this pear butter, sounds genius! Finally a fairly simple pear butter recipe. My family got a whole case of pears this weekend and must have over 30 pounds of fruit. So I pretty much filled two slow cookers with about 12 pounds of pears and still have quite a bit of pears left over. Looks like pear butter will be in a lot of canning jars or Christmas gifts this year.
