Prior to the end of the French and Indian War (in North America) or Seven Years War (in Europe) in 1765, Acadia was the name of a portion of the major French territory of Canada, approximately that portion of southern Quebec and the Maritime Provinces that lies directly East and Southeast of the most northern portion of what is now the State of Maine. At the end of that war, French Canada was handed over to the British, who deported many of the Francophone--and Francophile--residents of Acadia, who then fled to the nearest French-speaking territory, the Spanish colony of Luisiana. That is why today we associate "Cajun" with "Louisiana".
