Caramelized Cheese Covered Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Cheese Covered Grilled Cheese Sandwich

We all know that those little bits of melted cheese that ooze out and burn on the side are one of the best parts of a grilled cheese sandwich so why not take it one step further and purposely coat the the grilled cheese sandwich with cheese to caramelize on?

Please forgive me as I indulge in my grilled cheese sandwich obsession again so soon. I was planning on giving you a break but then I had another idea; an idea that would forever revolutionize the world of grilled cheese sandwiches! As I mentioned in my post about how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich , I like to shred or grate the cheese and sprinkle it on the bread in the pan which invariably leads to spilling some of the cheese into the pan where it gets stuck to the bottom of the sandwich and caramelizes. That cheese that caramelizes on the grilled cheese sandwich is easily one of the best parts of an already amazing thing and I am always looking forward to it. Last week while I was perfecting my grilled cheese sandwich techniques, some cheese spilled over into the pan I had a thought: What if I just happened to ”
accidentally
” spilled a
lot
more cheese into the pan, say enough to coat the entire sandwich?

Cheese Covered Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Once the idea got into my head there was just no denying it! I mean there is really no way that you can go wrong with doubling the cheese in a grilled cheese sandwich and trying your best to get more of that burnt on cheesy goodness! For the recipe I made the grilled cheese sandwich pretty much as normal and then I threw another helping of cheese into the pan, flipped the sandwich onto it and cooked it until the cheese had melted onto the bread and then caramelized, repeating the process on the other side.
All I can say is WOW! The caramelized cheese covered grilled cheese sandwich is simply amazing! Grilled cheese sandwiches will never be the same!
This grilled cheese sandwich went really well with a bowl of roasted tomato soup .

I thought I went too far by making a grilled cheese sandwich into a savory French toast. Hats off to you, sir; you've just upped the ante on decadent grilled cheese.

    I think you would like Howard Taylor's Chupaqueso recipe . . . http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2003-09-06 . . . the recipe's after the comic in the notes.

You can read the strip, too, but Shlock Mercenary's story-arc based for the most part and the individual daily comics don't necessarily stand on their own. Recommended if you like sci-fi, though. Huge backlog of stories to read and it's all free–and really good, to boot.

Now I'm craving a proper Grilled Cheese. I had one a couple days ago, but it was with white squish bread and colby– it melts well and it was cheap, but not quite enough zing. Now pepperjack cheese is another story!

2-day old bread… I never thought of that, but it makes sense. This whole idea is so invitingly decadent.

Fantastic idea!! Like you wrote, you just can't go wrong with adding more cheese ;). I'm all about food with various textures, and the crisp cheese crust sounds like the ideal finishing touch to the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.

I've been doing this when I make grilled cheese sandwiches for a certain family member, just haven't tried covering the entire sandwich. He loves the extra cheese that I drop in the pan and let it get crunchy. I will have to try this – it will be a hit for certain. Thanks!

We have a great coffee shop by our house that also is known as the grillcheeserie. They do wicked grilled cheese sandwiches and a lot of the time, cheese leaks out and gets grilled right to the sandwich. I always look forward to that and hope the outside of my sandwich is cheesy too. Kudos to you for just going ahead and doing it on purpose!

    Dear Kevin,

When I lived in England I ate lots of paninis, and in the end I was sick of them,so I came back to Spain I couldn´t stand them, however a few days ago I saw your blog and I decided to cook this sandwich, I did using Spanish cheese as it was the only one I had at home and I didn´t have time to go on shopping, which in my opinion it really improved it. I have to say it was awesome, I just couldn´t believe, you should try it too, I´m sure you won´t regret it, just have a look at this website and let me know what do you think.
    Kind regards
    Ana
