I first came across the concept of a clafoutis last year after I started food blogging. I had however, just missed cherry season so I decided to wait. Now that the local cherries are here I had my chance. A clafoutis is a custard like dessert where fruit, most commonly the cherry, is baked in a custard like batter that is similar to pancake batter. Several recipes that I saw recommended cooking the cherries whole, with the pits in but I really don’t enjoy having to worry about biting into pits as I eat so I pitted my cherries first. I ended up going with this really simple recipe for a cherry clafoutis . I was a bit surprised as to how easy the clafoutis was to make. You simply mix the batter and bake it. The cherry clafoutis turned out pretty good! I enjoyed the soft and moist texture of the clafoutis and the cherries went really well in it. Clafoutis can be made with other fruits and now I am looking forward to experimenting with it. I have seen a few blueberry clafoutis that have been looking good…
Cherry Clafoutis
ingredients
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pound cherries (pitted)
directions
- Mix the flour, sugar and salt in a bowl.
- Mix in the eggs, one at a time.
- Mix in the milk and vanilla extract.
- Place the cherries on the bottom of a greased 9 inch pie plate.
- Pour the batter over the cherries.
- Bake in a preheated 375F/190C oven until the clafoutis is puffed and golden brown, about 40-45 minutes.
I love clafoutis! Yours looks particularly scrumptious!
Cheers,
Rosa
Love it. Unfortunately British Cherries are under threat due to the loss of our cherry orchards. I have managed to find some in my local supermarket though. Never made a clafoutis before but have been told I have to take a dessert to a dinner party next week – might well try this one!
I have a big bag of cherries just waiting for me to do something with them! I think I may have found the answer! Your clafoutis looks delicious!
I made my first on this year too! I loved it! Beautiful as always Kevin!
This sounds like a cool dessert to try! Do you share all these things that you make and bake with your neighbours or family? It sure seems like a lot for you to finish on your own! I will love to have some 😉
I eat cherries EVERY SINGLE DAY, since they’re in season right now (thank goodness for cherry-pitter tools, haha), so seeing them in the clafoutis is a treat! :0)
That looks delicious! I wonder if there are cherries in my market right now…
Great summer dessert & looking at the ingredients, it's a pretty healthy one too!
lol, talk about timing (guess what I just posted this morning?). I’d put off trying a clafoutis for too long as well and its definitely a fun, easy, and delicious dessert. Looks great!
This is so easy. LIke you, I’ve only learend about clafoutis through food blogging. I hadn’t known they existed previously. I should probably try one out… it’s a pretty easy dessert. And, I’m sure that it’s delicious too!
this looks delicious! i have plans to make a mixed berry clafoutis this weekend. 🙂
I love the deep, devil-red color you have on your cherries 🙂 I’ve never had a good clafoutis before, sigh. I made one with pitted cherries but they puked their juice all over it– major sogginess.
An often forgotten treat…I love them. I love how yours is packed full of cherries.
I love clafoutis and I love cherries. The only thing, the hesitation factor for me, is the pitting of the cherries beforehand. Which is why, I love them when somebody else makes them! 😉 Looks yummy!
I’ve been saying that I am going to make one of these forever, but I still haven’t. Maybe I need to see if I can find some local cherries this weekend!
I’ve not made a clafoutis before. I bet my DH would love this.
Great pictures as always Kevin.
I echo many of the comments here—I love clafoutis and this cherry version sound scrumptious! (Making this would give me a great excuse to splurge on the stainless steel cherry pitter I’ve been coveting!)
Clafoutis are delicious! I love apricot ones – and also mized berries. Good job on your first one!

Look at the gorgeous color in your clafoutis! I agree with your decision to pit the cherries; who wants to worry about biting into a pit? Lovely photography as always.
I pit my cherries too…I guess we’re just lazy eaters! Ha!
That looks beautiful! Blueberry Clafouti is my fave. And my very fave is by Chris Kimball- http://www.milforddailynews.com/archive/x1780060372
I’ve made it many times and eventually have to post about it!!
the cherries are gorgeous! beautiful kevin.
Wow, kind of like a dessert pizza. I have to make clafoutis very soon!
looks amazing Kevin…I love cherries…yuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm
What a delicious dessert 🙂
Kevin,
I like mine unpitted!Don’t know why, I think I just give me the sensation of pitting those seeds.
Looks great, Kevin! I’ve been meaning to make a cherry clafoutis myself – hopefully before the summer’s over!
Kevin:
I was just thinking of making this! I have a big bag of cherries in my fridge. Looks lovely!
Fabulous dish Kevin, thanks for sharing. Cherries really are a summer treat.

I’m drooling Kevin!
I have never made clafoutis…but I would love to give it a try. Looks delicious!
i had never heard of a clafoutis until food blogging either! this looks so sweet and delicious!
This looks absolutely delicious, and like something that I could easily change over to GF too. Mmm…
Oh my, how did I miss this post! This looks delicious!
Ooh, was just thinking about making some kind of clafoutis.
This is one of my favorite desserts in France!! However, they DO always make it with whole cherries here which I find really takes away the enjoyment of eating it-dodging pits and all-I’d love to have one sans pits! This and all your recipes look amazing like usual :)!
this is an excellent use for cherries, kevin–one of the best i’ve seen. fabulous work.
Beautiful pictures! Your clafoutis looks tasty.
i have never heard of these before, but after reading your post, i must definitely try these. and i love cherries! how perfect 🙂
I’m new to clafoutis… and never used cooked cherries before… well avoiding jams!
Unfortunatly, here we only have cherry in june… maybe july.
I copy and paste your Cherry Clafoutis for the next year!
I love cherries they are so tasty, I would eat 2 slices of this because it looks fabulous.
mmm, this looks simple but delicious!
I have never made a clafoutis. I didn’t realize that it was so simple!
I could totally handle a clafoutis on the dessert scale of things. This looks great, Kevin.
You are whipping up all kinds of wonderful creations with summer foods … this one looks SUPER!
this seems doable enough for me. i’ll give it a try. i dont love berries but i love cherries! 🙂
Isn’t clafoutis a total revelation?? I was also astounded when I learned that something that sounds so fancy is so easy to make! I have several recipes on my blog – cherries, apricots, peaches – and another to follow soon. Glad you’ve joined hte clafoutis club 🙂
I have to agree about the pits – I prefer to keep all my teeth intact, also. But the French… not a chance! They don’t remove them for preserves, either!
Clafoutis looks tempting and easy to prepare. I’ll give it a try for the MBP :fruit fare event.
thanks kevin for making the recipe simple enough to try.
hi kevin, i tried exact same recipe with plums. it worked out great.
It seems the only real difference between my eggy clafouti and your tasty one is that you used one less egg – do you think that would’ve made the difference? Hmm…
I do mine the same way, except I have subbed in almond extract for the vanilla. The cherry and almond just go together so well!!
I just did a plum clafoutis and the only thing I wonder about it whether I cooked it long enough, as it fell directly after I took it out of the oven—it was so gorgeous before:( Tastes good but I wonder if it’s meant to be quite so moist.
I've been intrigued for a while by clafoutis, I scoured the web for recipes, and settled for yours – alas – no cherries – so I used nectarines instead!
