Fish and chips just isn’t the same without tartar sauce! Although there are a lot of different recipes out there, tartar sauce is commonly made from mayonnaise, chopped capers and chopped dill pickles. Since there is already dill pickle in the mix I like to add some dill which is of one of my favorite herbs. I like the way that lemon juice really brightens up mayonnaise and it does a great job of it in tartar sauce. When eating fish and chips I like to dip both the fish and the chips into the tartare sauce. Tartar sauce also goes really well with a lot of other seafood dishes. The addition of some tartar sauce makes a quick and tasty fish dish. I also like to add tartar sauce to things like crab cakes or other seafood patties in addition to serving it on the side or on top.

I like the dill in your tartar sauce. I don’t usually have herbs so my tartar sauce consists of mayo + relish. Next time I’ll try adding lemon.

Since I know I’m among fellow food lovers here, I’ll admit that I can still remember the day that I first made my own tartar sauce and discovered how awesome it is when homemade. I like your recipe, Kevin, and I hope to try it soon.

Dill is indeed a lovely herb, especially when combined with fish in any way. In Sweden, people usually boil their new potatoes with a few sprigs of dill in the cooking water. Dill potatoes pair very nicely with fish, or even meatballs, although I like them mashed together, skin and all, with some butter, salt and chopped chives.

As I’m English I like lots of salt and vinegar on my fish and chips, but having said that, I’m not averse to a bit of tartar sauce on the side.
Your recipe sounds great, and that fish looks magnificent.

Elra: I have not tried to make my own mayonnaise yet, though it is on the list of things that I want to try.

I too always make our tartare sauce. I’ve even been known to take it with us when we go out for fish and chips….
Good idea to add lemon juice.
Other things besides capers, dill pickle and fresh dill that are good in tartare sauce are: grainy mustard, onion and/or garlic, green olives with pimentos, fresh parsley and/or tarragon
