Homemade Microwave Popcorn

[heart_this] · Dec 21, 2012 · 10 Comments

Homemade Microwave Popcorn

Quick and easy homemade popcorn in the microwave in 2 minutes.

To make the cookies and cream popcorn I needed some popcorn which left me with a conundrum since I really don’t like most store bought microwave popcorn or making popcorn on the stove top. It never really occurred to me that I could make my own microwave popcorn at home so I was ready to make the popcorn on the stovetop when on a whim I did a search on the internet for homemade microwave popcorn and found that not only was it possible but that it was quite easy. As it turns out, all you need to do is place some popcorn kernels in a paper bag and microwave them for a few minutes! I really liked the idea since bulk popcorn kernels are dead cheap and it does not require any oil or any of the chemicals in store bought microwave popcorn and of course it is dead easy to make! You can eat it as is or season it with salt and butter or with any other seasoning that you want. You can even use it to make gourmet popcorn like caramel popcorn or cookies and cream popcorn .

Used to make popcorn like this all the time when I lived with my parents, but when they bought a new microwave it would always burn in the center, even if the rest wasn't done. Luckily it also works in a ceramic dish, if you have a cover.

I love my Sur La Table microwave popcorn popper. I use it several times a week, as I can make just what I want. http://www.surlatable.com/product/PRO-906545/Sur-La-Table-Microwave-Popcorn-Poppers

I hope it is ok to add the link, but it is the best and most reliable way to get microwave popcorn I have found, from paper bags to bowls.

I find it ridiculous that peole actually pay so much for popcorn when it's so easy (and more delicious) to do it yourself! good one(: I soemtimes add a dash of chilli powder, or herb salt for different flavours too! yum!

Thanks so much for publishing this wonderful recipe! This is the only way I make popcorn. Please don't use any old paper bag. Use only lunch bags. Other paper bags can be treated with substances to reduce insect infestation. I have used the regular sized lunch bags and also the larger sized ones. A quarter cup of kernels in the regular and about a third of a cup into the larger size. It is not necessary to staple the top of the bag. Just fold it over once so the bag can sit upright in your microwave. Crease the fold to discourage the popped kernals from escaping. Set microwave for 3 minutes or so. Popping usually begins after a minute or so. STAND CLOSE to the microwave once the popping starts and stop the oven immediately when you can count 3 seconds between pops. Open the bag to allow the small amount of steam to escape. Add your flavorings, spices, butter, whatever you like and enjoy some good, crispy popcorn. Should you leave the bag in too long and some of the popcorn has burned just throw the whole thing away and start over. Not a big loss, but helpful to the learning process. Make a bag for each person, throw in a movie and you have a wonderful family evening.

LOL, that's so funny and shows how so used to convenience foods we all are. I'd never thought about just buying popcorn and putting it in a paper bag but, yep, that would work 🙂

Glad I saw this, as the only microwave popcorn I've been able to find here in Bangkok is incredibly expensive and is the stuff imported from the US that's loaded with butter. I used to buy the low-calorie type in America but they don't seem to import that in Thailand. So, yay, now I'll try my own.

    [email protected]! And Merry Christmas!

Useless text. Popcorn is not just only corn. How to add and how much of oil in microwave? That's just the looking recipe.

Anonymous: You do not need any oil when making popcorn in the microwave so it is nice and light and pretty healthy!
