Peameal Bacon Sandwich

[heart_this] · May 3, 2008 · 45 Comments

Peameal Bacon Sandwich

One of my favorite weekend lunches is the simple peameal bacon sandwich. Peameal bacon is pork loin that is cured and rolled in cornmeal. Unlike normal bacon it is not full of fat and your pan is
not
swimming in grease after frying it. Peameal bacon is nice and juicy and full of flavour. Luckily I live within walking distance of the St. Lawrence market where there are several butchers that make their own peameal bacon and there a several shops that sell peameal bacon sandwiches. Every time I go I am tempted by the sights and smells of the peameal bacon. A peameal bacon sandwich can be as simple as fried peameal bacon in bread, or you can add some mustard, or you can make a BLT, etc. I like to make mine with the works, with lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo and sometimes pickles. It is a really tasty sandwich that never fails to satisfy. (Note: Those brown caramelized bits in the pan after frying the peameal are so full of flavour! I try to scrape them up and add them to the sandwich.)

I’ve never heard of peameal bacon but I like the sound of it from what you said ^__^. Your photos are fantastic, as always, by the way.

Hee. Never heard of peameal (what magical process turns cornmeal into peameal as soon as it hits the bacon?) but it sure sounds good…I love those crispy bits that get stuck on the pan too, so good! 🙂

It used to be peameal early 20th century, but cornmeal soon replaced it. However, the original name stuck.

Question for you Kevin: Where do you get all your recipes? You have such an eclectic mix of Asian, Greek, Western, etc., and you’re always off doing something super creative and reasonably intimidating. Where does your inspiration come from?

I wonder, is peameal bacon an EastCoast regional thing? I haven’t seen it around these parts in Vancouver. It’s definitely not at the local Safeway or major supermarkets. But again, I haven’t looked too hard. I’ll have to ask for it by name at my favourite meat store now and see who carries it. Looks bacony beautiful!

peameal bacon sounds a bit off-putting to someone (like myself) who doesn’t know what it is. that’s a shame because clearly it’s something that should never be overlooked!

Kevin – if you are ever in St Jacobs you can get awesome pemeal bacon there at the farmer’s market. We go on road trips to stock up. Another nice way to cook it is to bake it like a roast – it is amazing how tender it ca be!

This post reminded me of my favorite Simpsons quote:
Homer: Are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Ham?
    Lisa: No.
    Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

Thank you for showing me something new. Now I must figure out how to make peameal bacon.
