One of my favorite weekend lunches is the simple peameal bacon sandwich. Peameal bacon is pork loin that is cured and rolled in cornmeal. Unlike normal bacon it is not full of fat and your pan is
not
swimming in grease after frying it. Peameal bacon is nice and juicy and full of flavour. Luckily I live within walking distance of the St. Lawrence market where there are several butchers that make their own peameal bacon and there a several shops that sell peameal bacon sandwiches. Every time I go I am tempted by the sights and smells of the peameal bacon. A peameal bacon sandwich can be as simple as fried peameal bacon in bread, or you can add some mustard, or you can make a BLT, etc. I like to make mine with the works, with lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayo and sometimes pickles. It is a really tasty sandwich that never fails to satisfy. (Note: Those brown caramelized bits in the pan after frying the peameal are so full of flavour! I try to scrape them up and add them to the sandwich.)

Hee. Never heard of peameal (what magical process turns cornmeal into peameal as soon as it hits the bacon?) but it sure sounds good…I love those crispy bits that get stuck on the pan too, so good! 🙂
Chris Hotte says
It used to be peameal early 20th century, but cornmeal soon replaced it. However, the original name stuck.
Lori says
I’ve also never heard of peameal bacon before. But it sure sounds good! And that sandwich with the works looks awesome!
Peter M says
Kevin, this is as Toronto as they get…I luv having these sandwiches down at St. Lawrence Market.
Neen says
Question for you Kevin: Where do you get all your recipes? You have such an eclectic mix of Asian, Greek, Western, etc., and you’re always off doing something super creative and reasonably intimidating. Where does your inspiration come from?
HoneyB says
Kevin, you always make my mouth water and I wish I were eating at your house!
Jenny says
Wow Kevin, this looks incredible. I’m a sucker for a good sandwich, I just might have to make this one! Great pics!

Marc @ NoRecipes says
I’ve never heard of this before, is it a regional thing or have I just been cooking in a cave? Your sandwich looks delightful!
cakebrain says
I wonder, is peameal bacon an EastCoast regional thing? I haven’t seen it around these parts in Vancouver. It’s definitely not at the local Safeway or major supermarkets. But again, I haven’t looked too hard. I’ll have to ask for it by name at my favourite meat store now and see who carries it. Looks bacony beautiful!

Sigh…Another great food I’ll never find around here. It looks great though. I think I could really go for that sandwich!
Grace says
peameal bacon sounds a bit off-putting to someone (like myself) who doesn’t know what it is. that’s a shame because clearly it’s something that should never be overlooked!
Jerry says
Kevin – if you are ever in St Jacobs you can get awesome pemeal bacon there at the farmer’s market. We go on road trips to stock up. Another nice way to cook it is to bake it like a roast – it is amazing how tender it ca be!
diva says
i was just about to head into the kitchen to make myself a big cheese sandwich for lunch. can’t beat yours. looks like the king of sandwiches!

That’s a really decent-looking sammich you’ve got there.
Why do they call it peameal if it’s actually cornmeal?
daphne says
I haven’t heard of peameal bacon but that looks wonderful. Lovely layers on your sandwich.
Mr. Shiny & New says
MMM Peameal bacon… some people also refer to it as back-bacon. But what’s important is that it’s bacon, and bacon makes everything better, including this blog. 🙂
Jeff says
This post reminded me of my favorite Simpsons quote:
Homer: Are you saying you’re never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.
Thank you for showing me something new. Now I must figure out how to make peameal bacon.
RecipeGirl says
I wonder if this is something that is local to your area? I’ve never heard of peameal. Looks great though!
Dazey says
This is off topic but where do you get matcha powder? I’m also in Toronto so I thought I’d ask you and save myself some time searching. Thanks =)
Kevin says
Dazey: I got the matcha at Whole Foods. It was kind of expensive though. I would think that you could probably find some much cheaper in Chinatown.
