Last week a kind reader left a comment on my fried green tomatoes recipe suggesting that I try fried green tomato shrimp remoulade. I am always looking for new ways to enjoy fried green tomatoes and there is no way that you could go wrong topping them off with some shrimp in a tasty remoulade sauce . As luck would have it, I remembered seeing some green tomatoes at the farmers market last week so the fried green tomato shrimp remoulade made it to my meal plan really quickly! 🙂 This recipe is pretty easy and you can even make the remoulade sauce the day before which works out for the best as the flavours get a chance to mingle overnight. While researching this recipe I found out that this dish is often served with the shrimp and remoulade sauce chilled while the fried green tomatoes are piping hot to add a nice contrasting temperature to the dish. I have to say that the tangy fried green tomatoes go really well with the sweet and juicy shrimp in their tasty remoulade sauce! This recipe would work equally well for a light meal of as an appetizer.
Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade
- 2 cups salad greens (optional)
- 6 slices fried green tomatoes (hot)
- 12 large shrimp (shelled, deviened, cooked and chilled)
- 1/3 cup remoulade sauce (chilled)
- Divide the salad greens and fried green tomatoes between two plates topping the tomato slices each with 2 shrimp and a tablespoon remoulade sauce.

We also like a crabmeat with the remoulade sauce and we just had some FGT with a clintro lime mayo sauce that was really good.

I was just looking at the remoulade sauce recipe and noticed you use a good dose of cayenne. We never use cayenne anymore because we bought some years ago, used the tiniest amount in some chili (half of what the well-rated recipe called for, which wasn't a lot) and it literally ruined the chili. It was so gut-wrenchingly hot that I can honestly say it was the only meal I have ever had to throw away. No matter how hard we tried and how much we diluted, it was inedible. So my question is, are their different types of cayenne? Could some be hotter than others? I seriously can't imagine using a whole 1/4 t in such a small batch otherwise! I've seen you use cayenne a few times so I thought you might know.

Those look absolutely delicious! I think may definitely try this. I've never even tried fried green tomatoes — much less made them myself — but, my husband I do plan to sample them when we visit the Appalachia region this Fall.

also, before i forget, i made a lobster salad that i think you will dig. it has a spicy adobo-mayo sauce in it.
Alisa: As far as I know, there is only one type of cayenne pepper, though it is possible that different powders have different levels of heat. When adding spicy heat where you are not so familiar with the level of heat, I highly recommend that you add it slowly and taste test as you go. This way you can get it to the spiciness that you desire. Really you just want a mild heat here and if you used a hot paprika that would probably work as well. If you have a favorite hot sauce such as Tabasco or maybe sambal oelek you could also use a drop/dash of these as well.

Thanks Kevin, I hadn't thought to switch to hot paprika. Seriously, my husband likes things spicy, but we used the smallest amount of cayenne in a chili (I think it was 1/8 or 1/4 teaspoon in a batch big enough for 8 people) and it was totally inedible. Burn out your stomach lining hot. There must have been something astray with that cayenne. Still, I think it is a good idea to stick with hot sauce and hot paprika, I will seek that out, thanks!

I often see interesting recipes I can't get out of my mind. This was one of those. So I made this tonight. Wonderful…great use of my green tomatoes in the garden. As a southerner, I eat fried green tomatoes, but I never actually make them. Thanks for the inspiration.

Is no one going to address the fact that there is no actual recipe?? It’s just the breakdown of what’s in the recipe; tomatoes, reno lauds and greens. No remoulade or FGT recipe, so you have to look up a recipe on some other site for those of us that have never made remoulade or FGT. How did you season/cook the shrimp?? There’s so much missing
