Apple Chutney

[heart_this] · Nov 10, 2009 · 52 Comments

Apple Chutney

The farmers market has been bursting with apples over the last few weeks and it was time that I got around to doing something with them other than just snacking on them. I have been getting into chutneys lately and I was thinking that a spicy apple chutney would be a great idea. After searching the web for apple chutney recipes I decided to just go with a variation of the recipe that I have been using for chutneys. One thing that I did notice about the recipes that I did find was that most of them called for the use of tart green apples. I thought it would be a shame to not use some of those amazing varieties of apples available at the farmers market and so I used a mixture of a few of them. From there I added some onion, garlic, ginger and a jalapeno for a bit of heat. Cider vinegar was the obvious choice for the vinegar component and I went with brown sugar for the sweet component. With this being an apple chutney I could not pass up on adding raisins and a few spices that I remind me of apples. The chutney was as simple to make as throwing everything into a pot simmering it on the stove until it thickened. My apartment was filled with an amazing aroma of apples and spice while it simmered. The apple chutney turned out great! It was sweet and savoury at the same time with a nice blend of spices and a touch of heat. I am now looking forward to using the apple chutney in other dishes.

You know what I'd really like to see a blog post about, Kevin? I'd like to see you give us a tour of your (closet-sized) kitchen. Just because it's featured right in the title of your blog and I'd really like to see just exactly you have to work with that makes it so you're able to pull out such great dishes all the time.

I made this as is. The jalapeño overwhelmed the end result. I have only used jalapeños twice before so am not a good judge of potency.

I let it sit for a week, doubled the apples and brown sugar, cooked for another 30-45 minutes. The result was transcendent. I gave part of the batch to the friend who gave me the apples and I'm pretty sure he and his wife also ate the container it came in.

This stuff is good. Found the recipe and of course I didn't have everything it called for, so made a few adjustments. Used dried cranberries instead of raisins and was out of fresh ginger, so added a little more ground ginger. thanks for sharing the recipe!

I watched the 3 finalists in Food Network Star. Damaris Phillips made a sandwich with sweet potato biscuits for the bread and centered with roasted pork loin and mustard apple chutney. I made that for dinner last night, adding mustard to this Closet Cooking recipe for apple chutney. It turned out awesome. I did leave out a few spices. Anyways, that was exciting and stumbling on your site is too. Thanks for the recipe.

Just made this to use up a bunch of apples in the fridge – and it is amazing! I cut way back on the jalapeno because I am a wimp with heat. Just put in a small amount and it is absolutely delicious! Now I just need some yummy brie or any kind of cheese and crackers! So good! Next time – adding mustard!

This is incredibly good. I was looking for another condiment for our back bacon on a bun and tried this. We've run out every week and I'm now doubling up the batch every week due to the demand.

Thanks for posting this Kevin. You've helped to make our little farmers market stall more memorable!
