Blue Cheese Dressing

[heart_this] · Jul 8, 2021 · 8 Comments

Blue Cheese Dressing

A thick and creamy homemade blue cheese dressing that’s perfect for salads, dipping, sandwiches, etc.

With salad weather here I though that I would take the opportunity to update the photos for one of my favourite dressing recipes, the blue cheese dressing!
The base of the dressing is the combination of sour cream and mayonnaise with enough tangy buttermilk to thin it down to the desired consistency. (If I want to make it a little lighter I replace some or all of the sour cream and/or mayonnaise with thick and creamy Greek yogurt.) The star of the show is crumbled blue cheese, and I use a lot! Lemon juice is added for even more tanginess which is balanced out with some saltiness. I like to make this dressing nice and thick with plenty of large chunks of blue cheese but it’s pretty easy to puree the blue cheese chucks into a smoother dressing in a food processor.

Prep Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 10 minutes Servings: 24(1 1/2 cups or 24 1 tablespoon servings)

A thick and creamy homemade blue cheese dressing that’s perfect for salads, dipping, sandwiches, etc.

ingredients
  • 1/2 cup blue cheese, crumbled
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk or milk
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
directions
  1. Mix everything well and enjoy, optionally after chilling in the fridge for a while to let the flavours mingle and come out!
Option: Replace some or all of the mayonnaise or sour cream with Green yogurt.
Option: Use your favourite combination/ratio of sour cream to mayonnaise, even using either all sour cream or all mayonnaise.
Option: Use as much or as little buttermilk as required to get the desired consistency for the dressing. (Use more milk for a thinner dressing and less for a thicker dressing.)
Option: Add more lemon juice for more tanginess!
Option: Replace the lemon juice with apple cider vinegar or white vinegar.
Option: Add 1 teaspoon of dijon mustard!
Option: Add 1 teaspoon of sriracha!
Option: Add a fresh chopped herb such as parsley!

I also like to save a little money by using equal amounts of blue cheese and cottage cheese (large curd) – you get the chunky results and enough flavor from the blue cheese, but you save by not having to double up on the higher price of blue cheese versus cottage cheese.

Also, I think you mean salt and pepper – slat isn't in my cupboard, but it is part of my cupboard's construction (smile).
