It starts by cooking sausage, adding the tomatoes and seasoning, before adding the cream and parmesan, and finally tossing with the cooked pasta. Not only is this pasta quick and easy, it’s just packed with flavour!
Creamy Tomato Italian Sausage Pasta
A quick and easy pasta dish with Italian sausage in a creamy tomato sauce!
ingredients
- 8 ounces of pasta (such as rigatoni) (gluten-free for gluten-free)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 8 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon ground fennel seeds (optional)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste (optional)
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can whole tomatoes, crushed with hands*
- 1 tablespoon calabrian chilies, chopped (optional)**
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 cup heavy/whipping cream
- 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan cheese), grated
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons basil, thinly sliced (optional)
directions
- Start cooking the pasta as directed on the package.
- Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat, add the sausage and onion and cook until cooked, breaking the sausage apart as it cooks.
- Add the garlic, fennel, and tomato paste and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
- Add the tomatoes, calabrian chilies, balsamic vinegar, and oregano, bring to boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, mix in the cream and parmesan.
- Mix in the cooked and drained pasta, season with salt and pepper to taste, mix in the basil and enjoy!
Option: ** Omit the calabrian chilies or replace them with red chili flakes.
