Along with the green tomatoes the farmers market was also filled with perfectly ripe locally grown red field tomatoes. I had been waiting for the fresh field tomatoes so that I could try a caprese salad. A caprese salad or a insalata caprese is a simple salad consisting of fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. The salad can be seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper and maybe even a touch of balsamic vinegar. For my caprese salad I decided to spurge a little and I got some imported Italian fresh buffalo mozzarella. The caprese salad was really good! It was nice and fresh and tasted like summer. The buffalo mozzarella was soft and had an amazing texture without having a strong which only accentuated the flavours of the tomatoes and basil.

I lived on these salads one summer in college. Summer tomatoes are the best!
I have a friend who brings me fresh mozzarella from the Italians in Brooklyn. I’m telling you what, I can eat that stuff all by itself from here to the middle of next week. But it sure is pretty in your salad!
Hi Kevin, We're passing on the Brilliant Blog Award to you! Come to our site and follow the instructions and pass it on to your favorite sites! Btw, the salad looks to die for!

Gorgeous salad!!
Without a doubt my favorite salad. Mmmm.
So simple but you make everything look gorgeous! Perfect with the colors of the Italian flag!
Your salad looks so pretty! I’m so jealous of your plating skills!!
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprese_(antipasto)
I would call it an antipasto rather than a salad because I expect a salad to have more vegetable matter in it, rather than meat or dairy. Yours is a 50-50 split.
It looks great!
Beautifully styled Kevin.
Wow! I love how you have arranged it!
Fabulous photo – just explodes of the screen.
So easy, so beautiful, yum! Now I so wanna buy a pot of fresh basil! btw, I have a little surprise for you at my blog 🙂
Lovely salad. I want to reach out and snag one of those olives! YUM!

Wow, this looks really good though I am not a cheese eater!

I love caprese salad, but as you say the ingredients have to be good.
One of my favourite salads, the flavours just go so well together and I love your presentation.
Kevin this picture is absolutely fantastic! I love summer maters and cheese sandwiches .. but this is even better.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – these three ingredients together make one of the most perfect flavour combinations on the planet (some others being apples and cinnamon; or Pecorino cheese and honey). Simple perfection! And I love your plating…
What a fantastic picture, Kevin! our garden is just starting to produce tomatoes, and this would be a great use for them!
How absolutely refreshing Kevin…simplicity at it’s perfect best!
Big thumbs up! This is one of my favorite things to do with tomatoes and basil from the garden.

Hi there…one of my favorite things in the WORLD is a caprese salad. I even toast up some crostini rubbed with roasted cloves of garlic. Divine.
One more thing – if you can EVER get your hands on Burrata cheese, do so…it is amazing and will take your caprese salad to the next level. Had it for the first time at Mario Batali’s restaurant in his version of this salad…GREAT PHOTOS
My favorite summer salad. Looks beautiful!
You have a serious talent with food photography, Kevin. Well done, as always!

I actually just had a caprese salad and randomly did a google search after and found your site! I absolutely love it! Keep up the good work!
Caprese is a hit! Especially if you use mozzarella di bufala campana (Campania buffalo mozzarella) which is superb! Here in Italy we use to have caprese almost every day in summer, because it's easy to make and fresh. And most of all because it's so hot outside you don't really feel like cooking! Absolutely perfect.
Really good and simple serving idea!
I know you love caprese salads, i do too, i was doing some research and came across a pizza recipe for it. Caprese salad pizza, It was absolutley delious and I think you'd love it. Try it out! 🙂

A slice of sweet onion really tops this off!
I imagine you drizzled this with a good olive oil & some balsamic vinegar?
