At the beginning of the week I had plenty of freshly minted leftover Cuban roast pork (lechon asado) and of course the first thing that I thought to use it in was a sandwich, a Cuban sandwich in particular. The Cuban sandwich , popularized in Florida, consists of roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, yellow mustard and pickles and it is generally ‘pressed’ when grilled. As
planning would have it, I also just happened to also have some roast ham on hand so I was all set to make some Cuban sandwiches! These sandwiches are really easy to make, you pretty much just assemble the sandwich and grill it in a panini press. (I don’t have a panini press so I just used a grill pan and ‘pressed’ down on the sandwich with a mixing bowl.) Despite being so simple, the Cuban sandwich is packed full of flavour and all of the flavours work so well together! The Cuban sandwich works particularly well with the lechon asado that has been marinated in the sour orange and garlic mojo and if you have any extra mojo on hand, throw some into the sandwich or dip your sandwich into it for even more kick! If you are using lechon asado for your roast pork and if you had any crackling, add some to the sandwich for a tasty crunchy texture! These sandwiches certainly are a great way to enjoy some of the leftover Cuban roast pork (lechon asado) !

While I was enjoying my first Cuban sandwich earlier in the week, I was thinking abut how pork heavy the sandwich was with roast pork and ham and I could not resist the temptation to add some salty smoked bacon the the next one to make for an amazing pork trifecta!

We can get Cuban sandwiches any time we want here in Lakeland FL. You must use Cuban bread for it to be a really Cuban sandwiche.

My SIL made this for me- it was my first ever- and I was instantly hooked. I'll have to make it for myself now. So delicious!

I follow the same recipe, with a couple of exceptions: I add Genoa salami, and use real Cuban bread. Each time I go to Tampa to visit my best friend, I come home with several loaves of Cuban bread, cut it and freeze it. It's wonderful!

Hello kelvin! This is really wonderful 🙂 And i am having a question for you. Shall we add beef instead of pork in this sandwich? Because i am allergic to pork!

popular sandwich is the medianoche or "midnight" sandwich, so named because of the sandwich's popularity as a staple served in Havana's night clubs right around or after midnight.

This is my all time favorite sandwich. I lived in So. Fla. for many years and had it at least once a week while I lived there. I make them quite often and my recipe is pretty much the same as yours!
The only thing I can't get here is the beautiful weather… sigh…

Thank you for making an authentic Cuban sandwich! Most recipes these days seem to just want to add some weird ingredient like they can't help themselves. If you can get the real deal Cuban bread it will be that much better.

Looks like Cuban sandwich is one of the most appetizing sandwiches I've seen! I am very curious about Cuban roast pork now, so I will have to go see the recipe for it from your site, too.

This looks so nice. I just can’t resist something like this. Not only pork, guess roast duck or turkey would be really nice too. The best is the breads are grilled and the cheese melted a bit. And maybe stuff a piece of pineapple into it…yummy! 🙂

For St Paddy's Day one could replace the ham with corned beef, or simply add the corned beef with the two other meats!

This is so good! Love your blog and recipes!!! In response to those insisting Cuban bread is the only way to go….some of us in the Midwest cannot get our hands on authentic Cuban bread and must make substitutions. I'll take an alternative to none at all. Lol

We can't get Cuban bread here but there is a Spanish bakery in town. Would that make a good substitute?

I love this! Frontera used to make a wonderful one but it didn’t get pressed down so they were able to add some lettuce also. Unfortunately they don’t make it anymore and the other versions I’ve tried were very sad (no roast pork etc). Yours looks wonderful and now I’m wishing I had one for lunch today!!! Love your recipes!!!

Oh, the heavenly combination of flavors in a Cuban sandwich never ceases to amaze me! It’s truly a testament to the brilliance of simple ingredients coming together in perfect harmony. Your idea of adding bacon for a “pork trifecta” is both joyful and indulgent – a delicious culinary adventure worth exploring. Have you ever experimented with different types of pickles or mustard in your Cuban sandwiches, or do you stick to the traditional ingredients?

I remember the first time I tried a Cuban sandwich. It was during a family trip to Miami, and I still reminisce about the incredible flavors that were packed into that sandwich. The combination of roast pork, ham, and Swiss cheese, enhanced by the tang of pickles and mustard, left an indelible impression on my taste buds. Your recipe brought back those cherished memories, and I appreciate the added options for extra kick and a pork trifecta, which I am eager to try!
