Bacon Double Cheeseburger Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Bacon Double Cheeseburger Grilled Cheese Sandwich

All of the flavours of a bacon double cheese burger in a grilled cheese sandwich with plenty of ooey gooey melted cheese!

April is National grilled cheese month! Given my obsession with grilled cheese sandwiches you can bet that there are going to be some new grilled cheese sandwiches on Closet Cooking over the next few weeks starting off with these absolutely tasty bacon double cheeseburger grilled cheese sandwiches! The idea here is to include all of the flavours of a mouth watering bacon double cheese burger in grilled cheese form. This sandwich starts out with the bacon and then it moves on to some ground beef that is seasoned with some classic burger patty flavours such as onions, garlic, worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper or steak seasoning. You can’t have a burger without some condiments like ketchup and/or mustard and since you don’t really want a soggy grilled cheese sandwich I add them to the ground beef and cook off some of the excess moisture. Up next is the double cheese, the cheddar and mozzarella, followed by the fresh condiments including shredded lettuce, diced tomato and pickle. (You could skip the lettuce and tomato but trust me they work well in the sandwich without wilting or making it soggy.) I have to say that these are one of my new favourite grilled cheese sandwiches and they taste just like a bacon double cheese burger, only better!

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Total Time: 25 minutes Servings: 1

All of the flavours of a bacon double cheese burger in a grilled cheese sandwich with plenty of ooey gooey melted cheese!

ingredients
  • 2 strips bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 1/4 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 small onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper or steak seasoning to taste
  • 1 tablespoon salted butter, room temperature
  • 2 slices bread (gluten-free for gluten-free)
  • 1/4 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (or 1 slice), room temperature
  • 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded (or 1 slice), room temperature
  • 1/4 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1/4 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 1 tablespoon pickle, diced
directions
  1. Cook the bacon in a pan over medium heat, set aside on paper towels to drain.
  2. Add the beef and onion and cook, breaking the beef apart as it cooks, until cooked through, before draining any excess grease.
  3. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
  4. Mix in the ketchup, mustard, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, simmer to reduce, remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Butter the outside side of each slice of bread, place one slice in a pan buttered side down, sprinkle on half of the cheese, then top with the bacon, beef mixture, lettuce, tomato and pickle followed by the remaining cheese and slice of bread, buttered side up.
  6. Grill in a pan, preheated over medium heat, until golden brown on both sides and the cheese has melted, about 2-4 minutes per side.

    Thats called a patty melt.

You have been posting a lot of over-the-top junk food stuff lately, I'm wondering if you get more hits that way. This is like something you'd see Guy Fieri selling at a TGI Fridays. I know you have better taste than this.

Looks like a pretty healthy meal, except for that artery clogging, gliadin rich couple of slices of bread. If you leave that off, it's something I'd be happy to eat.

First of all, I too LOVE your pictures! Such an incredible job! I wanted to ask if the bread you do the sandwiches on is home made? Seems to me that if you are going to all the trouble to make them so amazing, they should be on home baked bread! Have you tried it? I bake most of what we eat and it is amazingly better than anything on the supermarket shelves. Thank you for your time and efforts! I love your site!

Unknown: I generally use either a sour dough or a Bavarian light rye for my grilled cheese sandwiches. I do make my own bread but I do not do it all that often because I find that I eat most of the loaf when it is fresh from the oven. 🙂

Okay, this was delicious. Didn't have pickles, so we used home made sauerkraut instead. Mmm good! Also, you inspired me to create a donair grilled cheese sandwich with sweet sauce. So good! Thanks for your yummy recipes!

Anonymous: The ketchup is mixed into the meat to cook off some of the moisture so you won't end up with a soggy sandwich. I enjoy dipping the sandwich in more ketchup as I eat it! 🙂

I made this sandwich today and it was so delicious. My husband said, "This is the most delicious grilled cheese I have ever tasted!" I can't believe he ate the whole thing. It was pretty easy to make. Next time I make this, I will make extra and use it for a topping, without the bread. Probably great with smashed potatoes; just leave out the lettuce. I can imagine there are numerous things to do with this recipe but the best by far was eating it as the recipe says. We were not disappointed.
