Closet Cooking

Cooking adventures in a small, closet sized, kitchen. - I came to realize that my meals were boring and that I had been eating the same few dishes over and over again for years. It was time for a change! I now spend my free time searching for, creating and trying tasty new recipes in my closet sized kitchen.

Closet Cooking’s Birthday: 2009

[heart_this] · Apr 29, 2009 · 149 Comments

Closet Cooking is now 2 years old!

It is times like these that I like to take some time to stop and look back. As I looked through all of my posts over the last year on Closet Cooking I was amazed at all of the tasty food that I have been making. My meals have certainly not been boring since I started food blogging and I have been enjoying them a lot more!

As I looked back over my posts I also noticed my transition from my old point and shoot camera to my new DSLR camera (a Canon XSi/450D). It certainly has been fun learning all the ins and outs of the new camera both with respects to food photography and using it for other purposes. I still have a lot to learn about the camera and about food photography and I look forward to learning more. The next thing on my list of things to do to improve my food photography is to pick up some new props. I’m sure that you are all tired of seeing that some old place mat. 🙂

I would once again like to take this opportunity to thank all of my readers! Your continued support provides me with the energy and inspiration to continue searching for new and wonderful flavour adventures.

It’s time for me to enjoy some celebratory apricot and white chocolate oatmeal cookies. I will leave you with some of my favorite recipes from the last year:

Steak and Guinness Pie
Chocolate Stout Cake with Bailey's Cream Cheese Frosting
Molten Chocolate Cake
Chinese Hot and Sour Soup
Nanaimo Bars
Pad Thai
Maple Pecan Pie
Thai Peanut Turkey Burger
Sweet Corn Ice Cream
Savoury Zucchini Bread with Roasted Red Peppers and Feta
Thai Lemon Shrimp
Cinnamon Bread

    ***ATTENTION***

    Mr. Kevin:

I don’t know if it’s just me, but that place-mat is your SIGNATURE piece. I would hate to see it go. I am so accustom to seeing it, that to not see it, would be like the sun deciding not to rise. It’s essential to your blog. Don’t let it go! Does anyone else feel this way? I just love that feature in your blog pics!

Happy birthday Closet Cooking! I have to agree with zinke and say that the placemat is distinctive. However the wooden table background makes for cleaner shots most of the time.

Maybe you should put the placemat pattern as the background image for the blog itself. Or send the placemat around the world, where it can be photographed doing interesting things. I vote for a visit to a Gorgonzola factory.

Thank you for your inspiring recipes and photos. I live way out in the country but my family was in the fruit and vegetable business at St Lawrence Market from the 1870’s-1970’s so I love your references to shopping in that area as well as the many other wonderful ethnic areas in Toronto.

Congratulations Kevin! I can’t believe CC is “only” 2 years old, there are so many recipes….Regarding your props, I just wanted to make a note: using props is fun and I enjoy it too, but it always amazes me that your photos were always so simply styled and yet your blog is one of the most populars out there. That says a lot about your cooking and the quality of your recipes. You should be very proud of it!

Thanks for all of the kind words every one. It seems that I will be keeping that old place mat after all. 🙂

[email protected] Cutting Edge of Ordinary: The dollar store is a great idea. There used to be one just down the street but it closed a while ago. I will have to look for another one.

Jaime and Jen DISH: The first thing that I noticed about this camera was that I needed a tripod to take a shot without my shaky hands blurring the photo. 🙂 I normally use it in aperture priority mode (Av) with the ISO to auto. I normally set the aperture to f8-f16 to get a whole plate of food in focus. When I want to purposely blur the background of the photo I move the aperture to f5.6 or lower. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. Just send me an email.

Mary: The St Lawrence market is my favorite place to shop. I head down there every Saturday morning form groceries.
