Honey garlic chicken is a classic Chinese takeout menu item and it’s super easy to make at home! This version skips the crispy breaded coating to keep things a little lighter and healthier. The recipe is as simple as mixing all of the sauce ingredients, and sautéing the chicken before adding the sauce to cook and thicken in the same pan! All said and done, it takes about as much time to make the chicken as it does to steam some rice to serve it over. You can enjoy the chicken by itself or you can easily add a veggie, such and diced bell peppers, that you can sauté in the same pan, for a more complete meal!
20 Minute Light Honey Garlic Chicken
Quick and easy, bite sized pieces of chicken sauteed in a honey garlic sauce!
ingredients
- 1 pound boneless and skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite sized pieces
- 1 tablespoon oil (peanut or vegetable)
- 1/3 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons garlic, chopped
- 1/3 cup chicken broth (or water)
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar, or white vinegar)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (gluten-free for gluten-free)
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
directions
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat, add the chicken, and cook until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes per side.
- Meanwhile, mix the honey, garlic, broth, vinegar, soy sauce, red pepper flakes, and cornstarch.
- Add the sauce mixture to the pan, bring it to a boil and simmer until it thickens a bit, about a minute.
- Add the butter and let it melt into the sauce before enjoying!
Option: Add a vegetable such as bell pepper, snap peas, sugar peas, broccoli, etc.
Option: Add 1 teaspoon sesame oil, at the end.
Option: Add 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds, at the end.

I didn’t have chicken broth on hand, so I used water. Next time, I’ll definitely use chicken broth, because the water made the taste a bit bland. Aside from that, this was good.
