Taco Sloppy Joes

Taco inspired beef sauce in a sloppy sandwiches with guacamole, cheese and pico de gallo!

These taco inspired sloppy joes are tasty and super easy to make! A special treat for dad on Father’s Day? The recipe starts out with a simple beef ‘sauce’ seasoned with a taco spices blend, garlic, onion, tomatoes, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce and a splash of vinegar. The sauce is thrown into a bun along with your favourite taco fillings, such as: cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, etc. This meal is quick enough to make on a busy weeknight and the whole family will enjoy it!

Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Servings: 4

Taco inspired beef sauce in a sloppy sandwiches with guacamole, cheese and pico de gallo!

ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes (or chunky salsa)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 4 buns (gluten-free for gluten-free), optionally toasted
  • 1/4 cup guacamole (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded (optional)
  • 1/2 cup pico de gallo (or salsa) (optional)
directions
  1. Cook the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking the beef apart as it cooks, until cooked through, about 10 minutes, before draining off an excess grease.
  2. Add the garlic and taco seasoning, mix and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
  3. Add the cornstarch mixed into the broth, the tomatoes, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and apple cider vinegar, bring to a boil, and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5-8 minutes.
  4. Divide the taco sloppy joes between the buns along with the guacamole, cheese, and pico de gallo and enjoy!
Note: For the tomatoes, use canned diced tomatoes, fired roasted diced tomatoes, fresh diced tomatoes.
Option: Use ground chicken or turkey if you desire.
Option: Add 1 cup bell pepper, diced.
Option: Add 1 small can diced green chiles along with the tomatoes.
Option: Add 1 tablespoon tomato paste along with the tomatoes.
Option: Add 1 cup black beans along with the tomatoes.
Option: Add 1 cup corn near the end.
Option: Top with your favourite taco toppings such as: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa, pico de gallo, avocado, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, etc.

    Holy cow this recipe is incredible. My husband couldn’t get enough of it. He works in cabinet refinishing and has long 10-12 hour days on his feet. It was great that he could come home to this and was asking when I’d make it again! Thanks for the recipe. <3
